She guides Akhila's Essential Yoga Mix which is a complete and fundamental yoga program that brings together anusara style, yin yoga, raja yoga and other heart based styles to quiet the mind through Yoga poses (asanas) and focused breathing (pranayama). She also teaches Soft Yoga for Mature Bodies, and Mindful Yoga Therapy for Veterans.
Akhila is thankful to her teachers over the years including study with Bhavani Girard of Sierra Center for Yoga Studies, Tai Sheridan and Dharma Yoga Studies, Yin Yoga with Paul Grilley, Yin Yoga and Insight Meditation with Sarah Powers, Restorative Yoga workshop with Judith Hanson Lasater, PH.D., Awareness Meditation with Dean Hudson of Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, and several semesters of Yoga classes at Sierra College. Akhila received certification in "Yoga Warriors" training at Central Mass Institute focusing on Vets and people with PTSD and in 2012 completed a Mindful Yoga Therapy for Veterans coping with Trauma through the Veterans Yoga project. She attended a powerful training class, "Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction" with Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli which helped solidify her meditation practice.
"I discovered yoga rather late in life – while I was working full time, raising two children and studying at California State University, Sacramento. After practicing Yoga for several years I began to notice a real change in my LIFE due to my Yoga practice. I felt calmer in spirit. I experienced better mental focus and concentration on day to day tasks, and my body was stronger and healthier than ever before. I came to realize the practice of Yoga made these positive changes happen, and I wanted to share this experience with others. The benefits of Yoga can be experienced by everyone, regardless of age, body size, or level of flexibility! Yoga is the gift you give to your spirit."
Akhila also enjoys holding Yoga and Meditation retreats. She has organized weekend retreats in Northern California, a week-long retreat in Maui and facilitated a yoga and meditation program on her Bali Yoga Health and Wellness Adventure tour in May 2013!
In June of 2009 Bonnie was given the name Akhila from Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma) while on retreat at MA Center in San Ramon. "Speaking the name aloud reminds me of the complete and universal compassion that Amma sets as her example for us all".
In 2012 Akhila completed a 12 month Interfaith Studies program fulfilling her desire to immerse more deeply into spirituality.
