Akhila's Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Yoga

After experiencing a traumatic event in her family, Akhila felt compelled to learn more about how yoga and meditation can help those experiencing trauma & stress. In 2012 & 2014 she completed week-long teacher training workshops with Veteran's Yoga Project: Mindful Yoga Therapy for Coping with Trauma and Mindful Resilience for Trauma Recovery. The training demonstrated that yoga and meditation can help with symptoms such as hyperarousal, avoidance, and re-experiencing of past trauma, a shattered sense of personal safety, hyper-vigilance, sleeplessness, anxiety, shortness of breath, stressful relationships with others, body pain, and more.
Akhila guided a Yoga Based Stress Management program at Dragonfly Yoga Studio in Penn Valley for over three years. Her first participants were Vietnam war veterans who had never done yoga before! Many had experienced the effects of PTSD.
Methodology
"We use yoga movements to ground the body and create a safe and stable foundation from which to work. Many times trauma can manifest as being "stuck" in the head - in defense mode- leaving an individual completely disconnected from their bodies. Using focused yoga movements and breath control we create a new body awareness." Yoga's meditative movements and practices help activate the body's parasympathetic nervous system which is our natural relaxation response or "rest and repair" system. Participants begin to self-regulate and bring about focus and clarity of mind. Yoga means union and our practice brings together a new operating system between the mind, body and spirit!
Participants report feeling more relaxed and clear in their everyday lives. More comments include: Experiencing better sleep, improved focus and concentration, less anger and irritability, greater ability to enjoy life in present moment - proof that yoga and meditation carries over "off-the-mat" into real life!
